Alexander von Humboldt (* 14. September 1769 in Berlin † 06. May 1859 Berlin) was a German polymath, geographer, naturalist and explorer, who held correspondence with a lot of researchers from different disciplines. He exchanged letters with Gauß and they also visited each other in 1826 and 1828. Their letters contained mostly topics about earth magnetism and the related instruments.
